About us

VRI is a free service, using video technology, available to Deaf people when they have a meeting with hearing staff at a government agency and a face-to-face NZSL Interpreter is not available.

VRI is a joint government agency initiative funded  by these Government agencies:

- Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC)

- Ministry of Education (MOE)

- Ministry of Health (MOH)

- Ministry of Social Development  (MSD)

Any government agency can use the VRI service.

Training and support for Government Agencies is provided by Deaf Aotearoa NZ (DANZ).

New Zealand Relay is the provider of VRI Services under contract with the  Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

How are we Deaf friendly?

VRI is available to Deaf users in smaller communities, in rural areas, and in some cities where there is a shortage of qualified NZSL interpreters.

You can use VRI for appointments with staff in the following government agencies:

  • ACC

  • Child, Youth and Family (CYFS)

  • Ministry of Education

  • Ministry of Health and Health Professionals

  • Senior Services

  • Work and Income
